Join our inaugural group of garden volunteers helping to maintain and beautify the garden around Annie the Railroad Dog’s garden and the newly seeded detention basin at Transfort’s Downtown Transit Center. We welcome adult volunteers of all abilities, no horticultural experience necessary. Gloves, tools and water are provided. While no special skills are required, the role will require bending, kneeling, stooping and navigating uneven surfaces. Through a 2025 Nature in the City grant, Transfort and Planning Services refreshed the garden around Annie the Railroad Dog’s historic grave. New irrigation was installed and the garden was planted with low-water-use pollinator species. The detention basin was re-seeded in the fall of 2025 and will need regular maintenance to allow the native plants and grasses to establish. The garden volunteers will help ensure these newly refreshed spaces function as designed and allow the plants to establish. This will benefit pollinators and the local community, serving as a naturalized space in the urban downtown corridor. Key Responsibilities: Garden maintenance including weeding, planting, and irrigation. General garden upkeep.

Wed. July 22 Magpie Meander Natural Area Meet the librarians and the Book Bike at the Soft Gold Park Playground. *This program is a partner program run by the Poudre River Public Library District. You must register at their website:https://poudrelibraries.librarycalendar.com Your little ones will discover flowers, bugs, tracks, and more in this slow-paced exploratory walk and storytime in the city's beautiful Natural Areas. Registration is required and space is limited. For ages 1-3. Parents/guardians must be present at all times.

Where: Poudre Trail. Park at the tennis courts at Lee Martinez Park and follow the paved trail west until you come to a small beach on the north side of the trail. When: 9:30am - 12pm. Registration highly suggested, but not required. Only registered participants will be notified if program is canceled or postponed. Program Description: All ages welcome! Use dip nets and collecting trays to discover what lives beneath the surface of the Cache la Poudre River. Biologists will be on hand to help identify your finds. All dip netting equipment is provided. Accessibility: Program takes place almost entirely on a paved bike trail easily accessible to any mobility devices. Up to 1 mile, round trip. Bathrooms available near the Lee Martinez Park playground. Where: Riverbend Ponds Natural Area. Park and meet at the parking lot off of Cairnes Drive. Activity Description: A new twist on nature journaling programs! This drop-in style Nature Journaling program will provide opportunity to go nature journaling each month with a volunteer naturalist. We will explore the unique nature journaling opportunities in different natural areas. This is not a formal class, thus will not include formal instruction, rather a gathering for collaboration. At the end, we will gather up at the end of the time to share observations, journal entries, learnings, experiences, and appreciations of the natural areas and the diversity they provide. What to bring: Bring your own nature journaling supplies. Supplies will NOT be provided for this program. "Art supplies” can range from just a pencil and paper, to paints, pens, and colored pencils. Bring whatever you have or enjoy!

Where: Pelican Marsh Natural Area. Park along San Juan Drive. Meet at the trailhead sign, by the bridge, just SW of Water's Way Park. Activity Description: This program presents a brief history of the natural area and focuses on observing, identifying, and learning about the flora and fauna found within the Pelican Marsh Natural Area including Benson Lake. Colorado is set to become the first state to reintroduce wolverines into the landscape. Learn about these charismatic critters and how they will reestablish in the Rocky Mountain landscape. Accessibility: Program takes place on dirt trails. Mostly easy, slightly uneven terrain with one steep hill each way. There is NO bathroom at the parking lot, only bathroom is one mile down the trail, but is accessible.
